What you need to know
Maritime security is one of 12 core issues in the National Security Strategy. The Ministry chairs the Maritime Security Oversight Committee which brings together 11 maritime security agencies to oversee this core issue. It acts as the Strategic Coordination Agency for maritime security, leads maritime security policy and implementation of the Maritime Security Strategy. The Strategy was first published in December 2020 and refreshed in June 2024.

The Maritime Security Strategy ensures New Zealand has a maritime security sector that is able to continue to secure New Zealand’s marine economic, cultural and environmental interests for future generations.
Guide to New Zealand’s Maritime Security Arrangements
The Guide to New Zealand’s Maritime Security Arrangements has been published today by the Maritime Security Oversight Committee. This aims to support the Working Together strand of the National Security Strategy which recognises national security as an all-of-nation activity where everyone has a role to play in securing New Zealand's maritime interests for future generations.
